Amar Singh (English: Amar Singh, born- 27 January, 1956, Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh; died- 1 August, 2020, Singapore) was an Indian politician, who was associated with the country’s political party Samajwadi Party. He was known for his English knowledge and political relations. Amar Singh was the General Secretary of the Samajwadi Party and a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. On 6 January 2010, he resigned from all the posts of the Samajwadi Party. After this, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav expelled him from the party on 2 February 2010. In the year 2011, Amar Singh also spent some time in judicial custody. Ultimately, he retired from politics.
Amar Singh was born on 27 January 1956 in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. He was a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh. He was elected to the Upper House on 5 July 2016. His activism had reduced after he parted ways with the Samajwadi Party. However, his closeness to the Bharatiya Janata Party was increasing till he fell ill. His political journey began in 1996 when he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier, Amar Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2002 and 2008. Apart from SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, Amar Singh also had very close relations with the family of megastar Amitabh Bachchan. These relations had soured in the last few years. In February this year, Amar Singh had released a video and apologized to Amitabh Bachchan.
Amar Singh, who was once considered close to Mulayam Singh Yadav, had started drifting away from the party before 2017. Akhilesh Yadav held Amar Singh responsible for the rift between Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav in the Samajwadi Party. Amar Singh was also criticised many times. Later, Amar Singh also started appearing in BJP programmes. He had also announced to donate his entire property to an organisation associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.[1]
Amar Singh did a short role in the English film ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’ (2000). Apart from this, he also played a politician in the upcoming film ‘JD’ directed by Shailendra Pandey.
Amar Singh died on August 1, 2020 in Singapore. He was suffering from kidney disease for about six months. He was undergoing treatment in Singapore. Amar Singh’s kidney failed in 2013. After this, his kidney was transplanted.
A video of Amar Singh was in the news in March 2020. In which he put an end to the rumors of his death and clarified that he is fine and is battling the disease. Sharing his earlier experiences, he said that- ‘Tiger is still alive’. His health had deteriorated earlier too, but every time he came back fighting death. In the video, Amar Singh says- ‘I am Amar Singh speaking from Singapore. I am sick, I am troubled by the vyadhi (problems) but I am not scared. I have courage, I have enthusiasm, I have consciousness. Our well-wishers and friends have spread this rumor very fast that Yamraj has called me to him. This is not true at all. My treatment is going on and if Maa Bhagwati blesses me, then after my surgery, I will come back with double the strength as soon as possible.’
