Guru Ramdas (born 24 September 1534; died 1 September 1581) was the fourth Guru of the Sikhs. He received the most important post of Guru in Sikhism on 1 September 1574. He remained on this post till 1 September 1581. He was the son-in-law of the third Sikh Guru Amardas. He founded a new city named ‘Amrit Sarovar’ in 1577, which later became famous as Amritsar.
Guru Ramdas also started digging a holy lake called ‘Satoshsar’. During the time of Guru Ramdas, people started collecting donations for the ‘Guru’. He was a person of very saintly nature. Due to this, Emperor Akbar also respected him. On the request of Guru Ramdas, Akbar did not take tax from Punjab for one year. Due to this, the Guru’s throne received enough money from the people. After Guru Ramdas, the Guru’s throne started running in the family tradition. He appointed his son Guru Arjun Dev as Guru after him.
