Bachi Singh Rawat (English: Bachi Singh Rawat, born- 1 August, 1949; died- 18 April, 2021) was a veteran politician of Bharatiya Janata Party from Uttarakhand. He was also associated with Uttar Pradesh. In the 2007 elections, Bachi Singh Rawat became the state president of BJP in the state. He got the party a majority in the assembly elections and remained in this post till 2009. Bachi Singh Rawat was a four-time MP from Almora Lok Sabha seat. He was the Minister of State for Defense and Minister of Science and Technology in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
Bachi Singh Rawat was born on August 1, 1949 in Pali village Almora near Ranikhet. He did his schooling in Almora itself. His native place was Haldwani. He did his post graduation from Lucknow University, from where he got a law degree, after which he completed MA Economics from Agra University. He has a wife Champa Rawat and a son Shashank.
People close to Bachi Singh Rawat say that he was named Bachi Singh Rawat later. His real name was Anand Singh Rawat. According to Ajay Verma, state vice-president of BJP’s OBC Morcha and close to Bachi Singh Rawat, when he was born, he became very ill. There was very little hope of his survival. On the advice of an astrologer, his father named him Bachi Singh Rawat. After naming him Bachi Singh Rawat, a miracle happened suddenly. His ill health got cured. Since then, he was known in the family as Bachi Singh Rawat.[1]
After joining politics, Bachi Singh Rawat was elected as a member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1992. In 1993, he contested the MLA election for the second time and won. In 1992, he got the post of Deputy Revenue Minister for the first time in the then Uttar Pradesh government. After getting the ticket for the first time from BJP in 1996, he became an MP from Almora Lok Sabha seat and entered national politics. In 1998, he won the Lok Sabha election for the second time. He remained an MP by winning the election for the third time as well.
After this, in the first Lok Sabha election held in Uttarakhand government in 2004, he defeated Harish Rawat’s wife Renuka Rawat and won the Almora Lok Sabha seat for the fourth time in a row. First he got the post of Minister of State for Defence and then Minister of Science and Technology. Bachi Singh Rawat contested the MLA election twice in the Uttar Pradesh government and won both times, whereas he never contested the MLA election in the Uttarakhand government.
Bachhi Singh Rawat was brought to the Pulmonary Medicine and General Medicine Department of AIIMS IPD on April 18, 2021 after suffering from a lung infection. He suffered a heart attack during treatment. Doctors gave him CPR, but he was declared dead at 8.47 pm.
