According to a major mythology of Bhai Dooj, Yamraj had gone to the house of his sister Yamunaji. Yamunaji welcomed her brother very well and offered him special dishes to eat. Yamraj, pleased with his sister’s service, gave a boon that any brother or sister who bathes in Yamuna on this day and worships Yama, will not go to Yamalok after death.
According to another legend, when Lord Krishna killed Narakasura and returned to Dwaraka, he was given a grand welcome by his sister Subhadra. He applied tilak on the forehead of Lord Krishna and wished for his long life. Since then the tradition of celebrating Bhai Dooj started.
