There is a mythological story related to Chhath Puja related to King Priyavrat. According to this legend, there used to be a king named Priyavrata. The king and his wife Malini were always sad because they had no children. They tried many measures to have a child but there was no result. Once King Priyavrat and his wife went to Maharishi Kashyap to wish to have a child and said, O Maharishi! Tell us some solution to have a child.
Hearing their grief, Maharishi Kashyap organized a yagya at the king’s place to get a child. Maharishi Kashyap asked Priyavrat’s wife Malini to eat the kheer prepared for the Yagya offering. The king fed that kheer to his wife and due to the effect of the kheer, the king’s wife became pregnant. Then after 9 months the queen had a son but he was born dead. Seeing this the king and his wife became more sad. After this, King Priyavrat took his dead son to the crematorium and tried to commit suicide due to separation from his son.
At the same time the goddess appeared in the crematorium. The goddess told King Priyavrat that I am Devasena, daughter of Brahma. I am called Shashthi because I am born from the sixth part of the basic nature of the universe. Tell me why you are worried. The king told the whole story. After this, Shashthi Devi told King Priyavrat that if you worship me properly and inspire others to worship me, then you will definitely get a son.
As per the instructions of the Goddess, the king kept a fast on Shashthi Tithi of Kartik Shukla and worshiped Goddess Shashthi as per the rituals and inspired the rest of the people to worship Goddess Shashthi as well. As a result of the worship of Shashthi Devi, the king’s wife Queen Malini became pregnant once again and after 9 months she was blessed with a son. It is believed that after this, Chhath Puja and fasting started on the Shashti Tithi of Kartik Shukla.
