Gajanan Tryambak Madkholkar (English: Gajanan Tryambak Madkholkar, born 28 December 1900, Mumbai, Maharashtra; died 27 November 1976) was a Marathi novelist, critic and journalist. Madkholkar was very famous for his poetic language style. He started his literary career with poetry as a member of the poetry society named ‘Ravi Kiran Mandal’.
Gajanan Trimbak Madkholkar was born on 28 December 1900 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was a Marathi novelist, critic and journalist. He is the initiator of writing political novels in Marathi language and is famous for his poetic style. He started his literary career with poetry as a member of the poetry society named ‘Ravi Kiran Mandal’. But later he became more famous as a critic and novelist. Some critics of Madkholkar have described the clear explanation of man-woman relationships in his narrative works as beyond the limits of decency. Despite being an expert in Sanskrit poetics and an aristocratic philosopher, he viewed modernity with sympathy.
The main critical works of Gajanan Trimbak Madkholkar are – ‘Vishnu Krishna Chiplushakar’ and ‘Vammay Vilas’.
Prominent among the novels are- ‘Muktatma’, ‘Shaap’, ‘Bhang Lete Deul’, ‘Duheri Jeevan’, ‘Prabhadura’, ‘Dak Bangla’, ‘Chandanbari’ etc.
‘Duheji Jeevan’ was confiscated by the government in 1942. Many of Madkholkar’s works have been translated into Hindi and other Indian languages.
