He belonged to Rampur Sahaswan Gharana. Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan was counted among the best musicians, for which the Government of India awarded him Padma Shri in 1991, Padma Bhushan in 2006 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018. Apart from Ghulam Mustafa Khan’s disciples, famous film singers and music queens Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Sonu Nigam, Hariharan, Shaan and A. R. Rahman’s name is included.
