Was an MP in the 16th Lok Sabha. In the 2014 elections, he contested from Raiganj seat of West Bengal on behalf of Marxist Communist Party. Apart from being a politician, Mohammad Salim was also known as a scholar and advocate. He was also very active in the religious field.
Mohammad Salim was also a poet who campaigned to make Urdu the second official language. He was a devout Muslim, who prayed regularly and never missed fasts. The Mohammad Yunus Salim Memorial Education Trust was established by his son Junaid Abdul Rehman to promote the study of the Quran. In 1987, Mohammad Salim joined the newly formed party during the expulsion of V.P. Singh from Congress and the formation of Jan Morcha. He played a role in bringing the parties together and forming the Janata Dal. In 1990, Mohammad Salim became the Governor of Bihar. In 1991, he again became MP from Katihar constituency. Mohammad Salim again joined the Congress in 1996 and remained a member until his death. He died on 15 January 2004 at his residence in Delhi after a brief illness.
