RC Prasad Singh (English: Arsi Prasad Singh, born 19 August 1911, Bihar; died 15 November 1996) was a famous poet, storyteller and playwright of India. RC Prasad Singh, who held an important place among the poets of the third rise of Chhayavad and was awarded the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’, is called the poet of life and youth. He is counted among the best poets of Bihar. RC Prasad Singh was such a prominent signature of Hindi and Maithili language, whose works have always been interesting to read. This great poet had dedicated many works to Hindi and Maithili literature including children’s poetry, story poetry, epic poetry, lyric poetry, radio metaphors and stories. Apart from being associated with literature, RC Babu was also politically aware and fearless. He left no stone unturned in taking a dig at the leaders through his writings.
RC Prasad Singh was born on August 19, 1911 in ‘Eraut’ (formerly Airavat), a village on the banks of the Bagmati River, located at a distance of eight kilometers from Rosra Railway Station in Samastipur district of Bihar. This village is the birthplace and workplace of great poet RC Prasad Singh, that is why this village is also called RC Nagar Eraut. After completing his education, RC Prasad Singh’s interest in literary writing increased. Impressed by his literary interest and writing style, Ramvriksh Benipuri gave him an opportunity in “Yuvak” newspaper. Benipuri ji was the editor of ‘Yuvak’ in those days. In his writings published in ‘Yuvak’, he had used such revolutionary words that the then British government had issued an arrest warrant against him.
Apart from being associated with literature, RC Prasad Singh was also a politically aware and fearless person. He never left any stone unturned in taking a dig at the leaders through his writings. Taking a sarcasm at the leaders, he has written that – “Lakhs of leaders came out from every village, puffed up like frogs in the rain, pale and pale.” The great poet RC Babu, who is always conscious about the environment and greenery, being saddened by the illegal cutting of trees and plants, writes in one place – “Today the forest itself cries and no one hears its cry. If only anyone could hear the cry of the forest, Why would you use an ax on him?” Regarding the memoirs related to RC Prasad Singh, journalist Sanjeev Kumar Singh says that – “Between 1956 and 1958, he served as Hindi Program Officer in All India Radio Lucknow and All India Radio Allahabad. During this time, an officer of All India Radio always had influence over him. One day, after leaving the job of Akashvani, he wrote, ‘The artist of immortal consciousness does not want to be dependent, the creator of the universe does not want to be humble’ and he dedicated his entire life to literature. And he remained engrossed in poetic practice till his death.
Rajashraya Thukranara, Padma Bhushan recipient Amritlal Nagar had said about RC Prasad Singh, “Whenever I see him, my heart becomes happy. In RC I get a simple glimpse of ancient literary devotion.” If we talk about the personality of RC Prasad, he never accepted dependence. He continued to express anger against control throughout his life. In the forties, the King of Jaipur wanted to honor the great poet RC as his state poet. To fulfill this objective, he requested and pleaded a lot, but RC Babu rejected the charanvritti and king’s shelter. Such was the personality of the great poet RC. Many writers including Acharya Ramchandra Shukla, Pandey Bechan Sharma ‘Ugra’, Ram Kumar Verma, Dr. Dhirendra Verma, Vishnu Prabhakar, Shiv Mangal Singh ‘Suman’, Buddhinath Mishra and Agyeya paid respect to this personality of Hindi and Maithili literature.
Statements of litterateurs: Acharya Janakivallabh Shastri writes that – “Among the four stars of Bihar, Prabhat along with Viyogi and RC along with Dinkar are remembered. But RC’s poetry is like life from the core to the Pralamb branches and Pallava leaves and flowers. He is a poet who is rare in any one topic, voice or imagination, as much as his feelings are related to the number of things, as many ascents and descents of his voice. Enhances his light, very few poets can claim to spread his talent with as many voices.”
Dr. Namvar Singh has written about ‘Nandadas’, a work of the great poet RC, that – “Among the romantic poets, some poets later turned towards spiritualism and RC is also one of them. Nirala, through the life story of Tulsidas, While ‘Jaageye Ashesh Chavidhar’ has developed the tradition by showing the image of a Chhayavadi poet who broke the spirit of the country, poet RC has rewritten the tradition through ‘Nandadas’.
Referring to the stories of RC Prasad Singh, Harish Jaiswal has written – “In the stories of RC Babu, where love seems to be at its peak, sacrifice also seems to be at its peak. Dr. Ramcharan Mahendra had said – “Shri RC Prasad Singh is working as a poet, story writer and one-act writer in Hindi.
