Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi, who gave the historic verdict, is celebrating his 70th birthday today.

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who gave the highest post in the history of the Supreme Court of the country, has retired. But everyone will be surprised to know that former CJI Gogoi’s birthday is today, November 18, just a day after his retirement.

Biography of the judge who wrote history

Former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Ranjan Gogoi was born on this day on 18 November 1954. At the time of his birth, no one would have thought that the 491 year old case would be decided by a bench headed by Ranjan Gogoi. Joined the Bar Council in 1978. Last year, on 3 October 2018, Ranjan Gogoi took over the post of CJI. However, he started his legal career in the Gauhati High Court in the year 2001, when he was appointed as a judge. After this, in the year 2010, he was appointed judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court. After which he was appointed Chief Justice of Punjab-Haryana High Court in 2011. After this, on 23rd April 2012, he was appointed judge of the Supreme Court for the first time.

Gogoi was known for strictness

Former Supreme Court CJI Ranj Gogoi is not only known for his impartial decisions, hard work and work ethic. Even before becoming the Chief Justice, his tough face was revealed. An incident happened after which his image emerged in front of everyone in a strict manner. For the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, he did something which no one would have even imagined. Before Gogoi became CJI, he had taken a decision, under which former Justice Markandey Katju was called to the Supreme Court for the first time. Actually, Katju had strongly criticized the court’s decision in a rape case in Kerala. After which he was issued a notice and ordered to appear. And this order was given by the same historical judge, whose birthday is today. However, on the lawyers’ application on this issue, Justice Gogoi released them with a warning.

Historic decision on Ram temple

The 491 year old case for which everyone was eagerly waiting, only one question was echoing in everyone’s mind that what would happen to that disputed land of Ayodhya. Responding to this, a bench of five judges headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi gave the verdict. In which it was ensured that Ram temple would be constructed at the same place.

During the tenure of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, for the first time in 10 years, such an occasion came that not a single judge’s seat remained vacant in the court. 34 judges were appointed during his tenure.

CJI’s office under RTI

Apart from this, Chief Justice Gogoi gave a historic decision to bring the CJI office under the ambit of RTI. In this decision, the court made it clear that the office of CJI is also a public authority, hence information can be obtained through RTI. Therefore, here also information can be sought under RTI.
