Girijakumar Mathur was born on August 22, 1919 in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh. Education took place in Jhansi and Lucknow. His father Devi Charan Mathur was a school teacher and was fond of literature and music. He also used to write poetry. Was proficient in playing sitar. Mother Lakshmidevi was a resident of Malwa and was educated. Girijakumar’s primary education took place at home. His father taught English, history, geography etc. at home. After doing intermediate from the local college, he went to Gwalior in 1936 for graduation degree. In 1938 he received his B.A. In 1941, he did M.A. from Lucknow University. And also passed the advocacy exam. Meanwhile, in 1940, he got married to poet Shakunt Mathur in Delhi.

Girija Kumar’s poetic debut began in 1934 by writing traditional poetry-savaiya in Braj language. He was greatly influenced by the works of Makhanlal Chaturvedi, Balkrishna Sharma ‘Naveen’ etc., the creators of the rebellious poetry tradition, and he got the preface of his first poetry collection ‘Manjeer’ published in 1941 written by Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala’. The beginning of his work consists of reactions arising from the events of the Second World War and is influenced by the ongoing national independence movement in India. Poet Girija Kumar is also one of the seven poets of ‘Tarasaptak’ edited and published by Agyeya in 1943. Here practicality can be seen in his creations. Apart from poetry, he has also been writing on one-act plays, criticism, lyric poetry and classical subjects. Poetry collections like Mandar, Manjeer, Nash aur Nirman, Dhoop Ke Dhan, Shilapankh Chamkile etc. written by him and the volume Kavya Prithvikalpa have been published. Apart from editing the literary magazine ‘Gagananchal’ of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, he has also written stories, plays and criticisms. A spiritual song written by him, “Hum Honge Kamyab” is very popular as a group anthem.
