Complete story of Govardhan Puja-
According to the mythological story of Govardhan Puja, once in Dwapar Yuga, Devraj Indra became proud of himself. To break the pride of Indra, Lord Shri Krishna created a wonderful leela. Shri Krishna saw that one day all the people of Brij were preparing delicious dishes and were busy preparing for some puja. Seeing this, Krishna ji asked Mother Yashoda, what is this preparation for?
After listening to Krishna’s words, Yashoda Mata told that all the villagers worship Indradev so that there is proper rainfall in the village and the crop never gets spoiled and food wealth remains. At that time people used to offer Annakoot (importance of Annakoot) to please Lord Indra. Yashoda Maiya also told Krishna ji that only by the grace of Lord Indra, food is produced and the cows get fodder from him.
On this, Shri Krishna said that Govardhan Mountain should be worshiped instead of Indra Dev because the cows get fodder from there. Indradev is never happy nor does he give darshan. On this matter, the people of Brij started worshiping Govardhan Mountain instead of Lord Indra. Seeing this Lord Indra became angry and started torrential rain. Lord Indra caused so much rain that the people of Brij suffered huge losses along with their crops.
Seeing the people of Braj in trouble, Shri Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan mountain on his little finger and asked all the people of Braj to take shelter under the mountain along with their cows and calves. On seeing this, Indra became more angry after seeing this act of Krishna and he increased the speed of rain even more. Then Shri Krishna told Sudarshan Chakra to control the speed of rain by sitting on the mountain and told Sheshnag to stop the water from coming towards the mountain by making a ridge.
Indra continued to rain for seven days continuously, then Lord Brahma told Indra that Shri Krishna is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and advised him to worship Lord Krishna. After listening to Lord Brahma, Indra asked for forgiveness from Shri Krishna and worshiped him and offered 56 types of Annakoot. Since then, Govarghan Parvat was worshiped and 56 offerings were made as Prasad to Shri Krishna.
