Harcharan Singh Brar (English: Harcharan Singh Brar, born- 21 January, 1919; died- 6 September, 2009) was a politician of the Indian National Congress and Chief Minister of Punjab. Harcharan Singh Brar became the Chief Minister after the then Chief Minister Beant Singh was killed in a bomb blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh. He remained Chief Minister from 31 August 1995 to 21 November 1996. He was also the Governor of Odisha and Haryana.
Harcharan Singh Brar was born on January 21, 1919 in Sarai Naga village on National Highway 16 between Mukhtar Sahib and Kot Kapura. He married Gurbinder Kaur Brar. His son Kanwarjit Singh Brar is an MLA from Muktsar and has a daughter Kanwaljit Kaur. Harcharan Singh Brar played an important role in creating separate districts of Muktsar and Moga from Faridkot district of Punjab.
Harcharan Singh Barar graduated from Government College, Lahore. Harcharan Singh Barar was a five-time member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He was elected from Muktsar in 1960-1962 and re-elected in 1962-1967 and 1992-1997. He was a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Gidderbaha in 1967-1972 and Kotkapura in 1969-1974. He served as Governor of Odisha from February, 1977 to September, 1977 and Governor of Haryana from 24 September, 1977 to 9 December, 1979.
Harcharan Singh Barar took over as the Chief Minister of Punjab on August 31, 1995, following the assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh in a blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh. He is credited with the creation of Muktsar and Moga districts out of Faridkot district. Harcharan Singh Barar also served as the Minister of Irrigation and Power and Minister of Health and Family Welfare. Barar died at his native village Sarai Naga on September 6, 2009 after a prolonged illness at the age of 90.
