Harcharan Singh Brar (English: Harcharan Singh Brar, born- 21 January, 1919; died- 6 September, 2009) was an Indian National Congress politician and Chief Minister of Punjab. Harcharan Singh Brar became the Chief Minister after the then Chief Minister Beant Singh was killed in a bomb blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh. He held the post of Chief Minister from August 31, 1995 to November 21, 1996. He was also the Governor of Odisha and Haryana.
Birth
Harcharan Singh Brar was born on January 21, 1919 in Sarai Naga village on National Highway 16 between Mukhtar Sahib and Kot Kapura. He married Gurbinder Kaur Brar. His son Kanwarjit Singh Brar is the MLA from Muktsar and a daughter Kanwaljit Kaur. Harcharan Singh Brar played an important role in making Muktsar and Moga separate districts from Faridkot district of Punjab.

Harcharan Singh Brar completed his graduation from Government College, Lahore.
career
Harcharan Singh Brar was a member of the Punjab Assembly five times. He was elected from Muktsar in 1960–1962 and re-elected in 1962–1967 and 1992–1997. He was a member of the Punjab Assembly from Gidderbaha in 1967-1972 and Kotkapura in 1969-1974. He served as the Governor of Odisha from February, 1977 to September, 1977 and as the Governor of Haryana from September 24, 1977 to December 9, 1979.
Chief Minister of Punjab
Harcharan Singh Brar took over as the Chief Minister of Punjab on August 31, 1995, following the assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh in the blast outside the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh. He is credited with the creation of Muktsar and Moga districts out of Faridkot district. Harcharan Singh Brar also served as the Minister of Irrigation and Power and Minister of Health and Family Welfare.

Harcharan Singh Brar died at his native village Sarai Naga on September 6, 2009 after a prolonged illness at the age of 90.
