Actor Soumitra Chatterjee was born in 1935 in Mirzapur Street near Siasdah Railway Station, Kolkata. His father was a lawyer by profession and worked as an actor as an amateur. Soumitra used to participate in school plays since childhood and as he grew up, his interest in theater gradually increased. He graduated from City College, Kolkata. Along with studies, he also acted in theater plays. Soumitra did his first job as an announcer in All India Radio.
Soumitra used to go to the sets to watch the shooting of films. In this sequence, once Soumitra went to the set to watch the shooting of Satyajit Ray’s film. And director Satyajit’s eyes fell on Soumitra, he signed Soumitra in his mind for his next film ‘Apur Sansar’. But he did not tell them this. One day Satyajit introduced Soumitra to people as Soumitra Chattopadhyay and told that he was the hero of his next film. Hearing this, Soumitra himself was surprised as to why Satyajit Ray said this.
Apart from directing films, Satyajit Ray also wrote novels. He had written a novel on the famous mystery thriller named ‘Feluda’ and based on this novel he had made the film ‘Sonar Kella’. Which was also directed by Satyajit. In the year 1979, he directed the film ‘Joy Baba Felunath’, the sequel of ‘Sonar Kella’. Let us tell you that apart from Satyajit Ray, Soumitra has also done excellent work with Mrinal Sen, Rituparno Ghosh and Tapan Sinha. Soumitra Chatterjee was honored with Padma Bhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke Award and National Award for his brilliant acting.
In the year 2018, he was honored with the ‘Legion of Honor’ award by the French government. Let us tell you that this award is the biggest civilian honor of France. Chatterjee has worked in more than 100 films in her career, including two Hindi films ‘Nirupama’ and ‘Hindustani Sipahi’. But in the year 2019, he died at the age of 85 due to Corona infection.
