According to mythology, in Satyayuga, there was a king named Indrasen, who ruled in the city of Mahishmati. He had all the material comforts. One day Narada Muni arrived at the court of King Indrasen with a message from his dead father. Narad ji told King Indrasen that a few days ago he met the king’s father in Yamalog. The king’s father told Narad ji that the fast of Ekadashi was broken during his lifetime, due to which he has not been able to attain salvation yet and he is still wandering in Yamalok.

Hearing this message, the king became very sad and asked Narad ji about the solution to liberate his father? Finding a solution, Narad ji told that if he observes the fast of Indira Ekadashi falling in the month of Ashwin, then his father will be freed from all kinds of sins. Also you will get a place in Baikuntha Dham.

After this, the king took a resolution to observe Indira Ekadashi fast and worshiped Lord Vishnu duly. Along with this, the king performed Shraddha of his ancestors, Brahmin feast and also did charity as per his capacity in their name, as a result of which the king’s father got salvation and he attained salvation. Not only this, King Indrasen also attained Vaikuntha Dham after his death. This is the reason why even today people observe this fast with full devotion.
