Jayaramdas Daulatram (English: Jairamdas Daulatram, born- 21 July, 1890; Death- 1 March 1979) was a freedom fighter and politician of India. He was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly. After independence, Jayaramdas Daulatram was appointed the first Governor of Bihar and the second Agriculture Minister of India. He was also the Governor of Assam. He died in 1979. In his memory, a postage stamp was issued by the Government of India in 1985.
Introduction
Jayaramdas Daulatram was a famous Congress leader, who held various important positions in the country. He was born on 21 July 1890 in a rich Kshatriya family in Karachi (now in Pakistan). Their ancestors had already lived in high positions with the rights of the British over Sindh. Jayaramdas was a meritorious student. He came first in the entire Sindh province in the high school examination. B.A. He had finished second in the entire presidency (including Sindh) in the examination. Jayaramdas Daulatram from Mumbai took a law degree and started practicing in Karachi.
Entry into politics
In the student life, Jayaramdas Daulatram had in touch with famous leaders Gopalakrishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Tilak, Firozeshah Mehta and Gandhiji etc. He also met Lala Lajpatarai. These contacts attracted him towards political activities. In 1916, he came in the public sector by becoming the Regional Secretary of Annie Besant’s ‘Homerul League’ and was left behind.
Jail travel
Jayaramdas Daulatram participated in the 1919 Amritsar Congress and only then started editing a national letter called ‘Hindustan’. In this letter, due to publishing patriotic articles, he had to be arrested and sentenced to two years.
Editing work
On the insistence of Lala Lajpatarai and Malaviya ji, he became the editor of the famous English daily ‘Hindustan Times’ of Delhi in 1925. He was the main organizer in the Namak Satyagraha in Mumbai after returning from Sindh after two years and a bullet was also shot in his stomach in a police firing on the crowd. After Gandhiji’s arrest, Jayaramdas Daulatram edited his letter ‘Young India’. But soon he was arrested again and Gandhi-Irwin could come out of jail in 1931 after the agreement.
General minister and secretary
Jayaramdas was made the General Secretary of the Congress that in 1932 he was again arrested and put in jail for two years. In 1942, he was again arrested and remained under house arrest. He was elected a member of the Legislative Council. But at the behest of Gandhiji, he also left it and became the secretary of the ‘Foreign Textiles Exclusion Committee’ in 1928 AD. At the same time, he was made a member of the Congress Working Committee and he held the post till 1940 AD.
Constitution member
After independence, Jayardas Daulatram was a member of the Constitution Council, the Governor of Bihar, Food and Agriculture Minister in the Central Government for some time. He later worked as the Governor of Assam for 6 years. In addition to the release of the editing of ‘Sampoorna Gandhi Vamay’ for some time, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1959 to 1970 AD. Jayardas of religious views was a supporter of cottage industries and biased to give Indian form to education.
Death
Jayaramdas Daulatram died on 1 March 1979. In his memory, a postage stamp was issued by the Government of India in 1985.
