History News Desk !!! Juthika Roy (English: Juthika Roy, born: April 20, 1920; Death: 5 February 2014) was the Indian Bhajan (Bhakti music) singer. He gave his voice to more than 200 Hindi and more than 100 Bengali songs in his four -decade long career. He also recorded Hindi devotional music for Hindi films. Juthika Roy was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian award in 1972 from Padma Shri. Juthika Roy was one of the favorite singers of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Juthika Roy was born on 20 April 1920 at a place called Aamata in Howrah district of United Bengal. Juthika Roy started singing at a young age. Juthika Roy got fame in 1930. He was also known as ‘modern Meera’ for the sweet hymns of Meera. She recorded her first album in 1932 when she was 12 years old. The talent of Juthika Roy was recognized by poet Qazi Nazrul Islam and Bengali music director Kamal Das Gupta and both were his patron. She was one of the selected singers of the country in 1940 and 1950. Their hymns ‘Ghungta’s pat khol’ and ‘pag Ghangro Dam Meera Nachi’ were very popular. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972. On 15 August 1947, on India’s first Independence Day, Nehruji hoisted the flag and pleaded him on the radio continuously. He was told by Nehru ji that by the time he reached the Red Fort and hoist the tricolor, she should sing. Not only this, when Gandhiji was in Pune jail, he used to listen to his songs every day. Every morning he started the prayer meeting by playing his own songs. Juthika Roy has also given her melodious voice in two Bengali films ‘Dhuli’ and ‘Ratandeep’.

Bhajan singer Juthika Roy died on 5 February 2014 in Kolkata. She was 93. He was admitted to the Ramakrishna Mission Service Foundation in January 2014 due to his age -related diseases.
