Kamal Amrohi (English: Kamal Amrohi, born: January 17, 1918 – Death: 11 February 1993) was a producer -director who created poetry on screen like palace, Pakiza and Razia Sultan. Kamal Amrohi left his indelible mark on Indian cinema as the best lyricist, screenplay and dialogue writer and producer and director and made significant contribution in giving him a direction. Pakiza was the dream project of his life. In the last phase of his film life, he wanted to make a film called ‘last Mughal’, but his dream remained incomplete.
Introduction
Kamal Amrohi’s original name was ‘Syed Aamir Haider’. Born on 17 January 1918 in the Zamindar family of Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, Kamal Amrohi’s reaching Mumbai and then creating a history of success is like a film story. He used to harass the entire village with his mischief in childhood. Once he scolded his mother, he promised that he would be famous one day and will fill his pallu with silver coins. Fed up with his mischief, one day his elder brother slapped him in anger, and Kamal Amrohi ran away from home in resentment and reached Lahore.
Lahore proved to change the direction of his life for Kamal Amrohi. There he earned a master’s degree in ‘oriental languages’ and then started writing pillars regularly in a Urdu newspaper at the age of 18. Honoring his talent, the editor of the newspaper increased his salary to Rs 300 monthly, which was a huge amount at that time.
In Calcutta
After working for some time in the newspaper, he moved to Calcutta and then came to Mumbai from there. In Lahore, he met the famous singer, actor Kundanlal Sehgal, who recognized his talent and took him to the producer-director Sohrab Modi, owner of ‘Minerva Movetone’ to work in films. At the same time, one of his short stories ‘Sapne Ka Mahal’ was affected by producer-director and storyteller ‘Khwaja Ahmed Abbas’.
Marital life
Kamal Amrohi performed three weddings. His first wife was named ‘Bano’, who was the maid of Nargis’s mother Jaddanbai. He married ‘Mahmudi’ after Bano died of asthma. Kamal Amrohi married the third marriage to actress Meena Kumari, who was about fifteen years younger than her. The two met on the set of a film and fell in love between them. Kamal Amrohi was 34 years old at that time while Meena Kumari was 19 years old. In 1952, both of them got married but the relationship could not last long and they were separated. Kamal Amrohi’s love for Meena Kumari probably remained intact till the end, only then she was buried next to the grave of Meena Kumari in the grave after death.

Kamal Amrohi came to know that Sohrab Modi is looking for a story. His story -based film ‘Pukar’ (1939) was a super hit. He wrote four songs for this film starring ‘Naseem Bano’ and ‘Chandramohan’-

Kamal Amrohi worked for very selected films but whatever work he did with full health and passion. His personality was imprinted on his work. This is the reason why his speed of making films was very slow and he had to face criticism for this.
Mahal (film)
Producer Ashok Kumar’s film ‘Mahal’ proved to be an important turn of Kamal Amrohi’s career. He was entrusted with the responsibility of directing the film. The film, made using the fabric of mystery and romance, was a superhit made using the melodious song-music and sounds of sound and with this, the process of producing horror and suspense films in Bollywood started. The tremendous success of the film established the heroine Madhubala and singer Lata Mangeshkar in the film industry.
Establishment of Kamalistan Studio
After the success of the palace film, Kamal Amrohi established ‘Kamal Pictures’ in 1953 and Kamalistan Studio in 1958. Under the banner of Kamal Pictures, he produced the film ‘Daira’ with actress wife Meena Kumari but the film, considered in India’s art films, could not run at the box office. Meanwhile, producer-director K. Asif was busy making his ambitious film Mughal-e-Azam. Wajahat Mirza was writing dialogue for this film, but Asif felt that the dialogue written by the audience could not get out of the minds of the audience years and for this he did not find anyone more suitable than Kamal Amrohi. He included him among his four dialogues. The dialogues written in his Urdu language became so famous that during that time lovers and girlfriends started expressing their love through the dialogues of Mughal Azam in love papers. He was given the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue Author for this film.
Pakiza (film)
Pakiza Kamal Amrohi had a dream project on which he started working in 1958. At that time it was going to be made in Black and White. After some time, when the cinemasop started in India, he started making it as a cinemasop in 1961 but the film remained closed till 1961-69 due to Kamal Amrohi’s separation from his third wife Meena Kumari. Later, somehow he persuaded Meena Kumari to work in the film and finally the film was completed in 1971 and released in February 1972.
Adorned with excellent dialogue, song-music, visualization and acting, the film achieved a record success and today the film is counted among the classic films of history. He also wrote a song for this film, Mausam Hai Aashiqana .. Which was very popular. After this film, Kamal Amrohi’s ties with films was broken for some time. In 1983, he again moved the film industry and got his direction capacity ironed with the film Razia Sultan.
Death
This Azim personality, who tied the audience with her amazing, said goodbye to this world on 11 February 1993.
