Members of The Film Federation of India, the apex body that selects the official entry for the Best Foreign Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, announced Missing Ladies as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards at a ceremony in Chennai. Missing Ladies is directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan. It stars Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava and Nitanshi Goyal in lead roles. The jury members were introduced to the media by Film Federation of India President Ravi Kottarakara. Last year’s entry was Jude Anthoney Joseph’s 2018 which did not make it to the shortlist of the 96th Academy Awards.
However, India had a great performance at the 95th Academy Awards as SS Rajamouli’s RRR’s Natu Natu song won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Kartikey Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s documentary The Elephant Whispers won the award in the Best Documentary (Short) category. Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes also made it to the final list for Best Documentary Feature. The last Indian feature film to make it to the final shortlist was Aamir Khan-Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan (2001) which lost to No Man’s Land at the 74th Academy Awards.
