Life introduction
Jagjit ji was born on 8 February 1941 in Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Father Sardar Amar Singh Dhamani was an employee of the Government of India. Jagjit ji’s family is originally from Dalla village in Ropar district of Punjab. Maa Bachchan Kaur was a resident of Utkalan village in Samralala, Punjab. Jagjit’s childhood name was Jeet. Due to crores of listeners, Singh Saheb became Jagjit to win Jag in a few decades.[1]
Education
Initial education took place at Khalsa School in Ganganagar and later came to Jalandhar to study. He took a bachelor’s degree from DAV College and after that he also did post graduation in history from Kurukshetra University.[1]
Beginning of music
In childhood, his father inherited music. In Ganganagar itself, he started learning classical music for two years under the association of Pandit Chhagan Lal Sharma. Going forward, he learned the nuances of Khyal, Thumri and Dhrupad from the Ustad Jamal Khan Saheb of the Sania Gharana.[2] The father wished that his son should go to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) but Jagjit had a tune to become a singer. Seeing his interest in music while studying at Kurukshetra University, Vice Chancellor Professor Surajbhan excited Jagjit Singh ji. On his own, he moved to Mumbai in 1965.
Struggle in life
Jagjit Singh used to live as a paying guest and continued to juggle for advertisements by singing jingles or singing in a wedding ceremony, etc. A round of struggle started from here.[2] After this, all attempts to give hit music in films failed badly. A few years ago, the music of the film ‘Leela’ starring Dimple Kapadia and Vinod Khanna was average. Khudai in 1994, Billu Badshah in 1989, the voice of the law in 1989, Rahi in 1987, Jwala in 1986, Long Da Lashtara in 1986, Ravana in 1984 and Sitam in 1982 and Sitam’s songs did not work nor films.
Marriage
In 1967, Jagjit ji met Chitra ji. Two years later, the two tied the knot in 1969.
