Mario Soares (English: Mario Soares, born: December 7, 1924, Portugal; died: January 7, 2017) was the former President of Portugal. Mario Soares was a man who fought for freedom his whole life. He fought this battle against dictatorship. During this time he went to jail and also faced deportation.
Former President of Portugal Mario Soares died on Saturday, January 7, at the age of 92. He was the founder of the Socialist Party of Portugal.[2]
Mario Soares was the 17th President of the country from 1986 to 1996. He also served as Prime Minister. He was the Prime Minister of the country from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1985. Soares is considered the father of the establishment of democracy in Portugal. On April 25, 1974, he contributed to the establishment of democracy in the country by overthrowing the regime of dictator Oliveira Salazar without violence.[1]
He was one of the founders of the Socialist Party led by current Prime Minister Antonio Costa. He is seen as the father of Portugal’s modern democracy.
