History News Desk !!! Sukumar Ray (English: Sukumar Ray, born: 30 October 1887, Kolkata; died – 10 September 1923) was a famous poet, writer and painter of Bengali language. He used to write humorous poems and stories for children. Sukumar Ray was a prominent writer-journalist and painter of his time. Sukumar Ray was a disciple of Guru Rabindranath Tagore. His father Upendranath Choudhary was an expert in children’s literature and a staunch Brahmo Samajist. Sukumar Ray’s absurd poems are still remembered by Bengali children due to their imagination, rhyme and exploratory description. Sukumar Ray was the father of Bharat Ratna awardee Satyajit Ray, who gave a new identity to Indian films in the world.

Sukumar Ray was born on 30 October 1887 in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Sukumar Ray’s father Upendrakishore Ray was also a writer and painter who used to write interesting poems for children in Bengali language. Sukumar Ray was married to Suprabha. Suprabha Ray was the owner of a tall and composed personality and was a skilled singer of Rabindra Sangeet and her voice was very powerful. Sukumar Ray died in 1923 when Satyajit Ray was barely two years old.

Satyajit Ray / Satyajit Ray / Shotojit Roy, son of Sukumar Ray, was one of the greatest film personalities of the twentieth century, who, apart from giving a new direction to the realistic genre of films, also showed his talent in other genres like literature, painting. Satyajit Ray is primarily known as a film director, but he has also earned notable fame as a writer and litterateur. Satyajit Ray used to do many works related to film production himself. These include direction, cinematography, screenplay, background music, art direction, editing etc.

Apart from being a filmmaker, he was also a storyteller, painter and film critic. Satyajit Ray, who gave a new identity to Indian films in the world, has been awarded Bharat Ratna (1992) as well as Padma Shri (1958), Padma Bhushan (1965), Padma Vibhushan (1976) and Ramon Magsaysay Award (1967).
