Leela Chitnis acted for 52 years and was the heroine of Ashok Kumar, and later she appeared in the roles of Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand’s mother in many films. Apart from acting, Leela Chitnis also produced and directed a film ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ (1955).
Biography
After Durga Khote, Leela Chitnis’s name is at the top among the graduate actresses who came to Hindustani cinema. In her life too, after divorce from her husband Gajanan Yashwant Chitnis, she raised four children with great care and she died at the age of 93 in America at the house of her eldest son. Leela Chitnis cooperated with her husband in the freedom struggle in such a way that she kept the revolutionary Manvendra Nath Roy away from the eyes of the British police in her house. She was the first Indian actress who worked in an advertisement film for ‘Lux’ soap in 1941. Before her, only Hollywood heroines were taken. But in the era of 1930, the traditional society did not give any kind of freedom and facilities to women, then these women have acted on stage, done films and also cooperated in the freedom struggle. Leela Chitnis had to prove her ability in the studio of a rare beautiful woman like Devika Rani with her favorite hero Ashok Kumar. Devika Rani was a strict administrator. It was not an easy journey to play the mother of actors who were once heroes after being displaced by newcomers from the roles of girlfriends.
