Sunil Gangopadhyay or Sunil Ganguly (English: Sunil Gangopadhyay or Sunil Ganguly, born- 7 September, 1934; died- 23 October, 2012) was a famous Bengali litterateur awarded with Saraswati Samman. He was a famous poet and novelist.
The prestigious literary award in India ‘Saraswati Samman’ has been given to the famous Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhyay. Born in 1934 in Faridpur district, now in Bangladesh, to a teacher father, Sunil Gangopadhyay has written more than 200 books. In 1985, his novel ‘Shei Shomoye’ (That Time), based on the history of India under British rule, was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award. This book has been translated into many languages and is still considered a best seller in Bengali. Films have also been made on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novels. Famous Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray made films on two of his novels.
