Kapil Dev Dwivedi (English: Kapil Dev Dwivedi, born- 6 December, 1918; died- 28 August, 2011) was an outstanding scholar of Vedas, Vedanga, Sanskrit, grammar and linguistics. He wrote more than 75 treatises on these subjects. He also participated in the freedom struggle and suffered rigorous imprisonment for six months. Kapil Dev Dwivedi was also the Vice Chancellor of ‘Gurukul Kangri University’. He was decorated with ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India in 1991. Kapil Dev Dwivedi is counted among the world’s leading orientalists, linguists and Veda scholars. He is considered the pioneer and promoter of the simplification method of Sanskrit. Dr. Kapil Dev Dwivedi, decorated with honors like Padmashree, Vedaratna, Maharishi Valmiki Award, Presidential Award etc. and an outstanding scholar of Vedas, Vedanga, Sanskrit Grammar and Linguistics, was born on December 6, 1998 in Bara (Bare, Bihar) of Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. Near the famous Chausa i.e. across the river Karmanasha under the district Buxar of Balramdas and Mata Vasumati Devi of a distinguished family. Had happened. His father was a tyagi, an ascetic social worker, who devoted his entire life to serving the country. Baba i.e. Grandfather Chhedilal ji was a famous industrialist.
When Kapil Dev ji passed the fourth class, he was sent to Gurukul Mahavidyalaya, Jwalapur, Haridwar for higher education in Sanskrit at the young age of 10 years. Where he received education in Gurukul from 1928 to 1939. While staying in Gurukul, he passed the ‘Shastri’ examination and received the Gurukul title of ‘Vidyabhaskar’. He got first division in all the examinations. While staying here, he memorized two Vedas (Yajurveda and Samaveda) and as a result was given the title of ‘Dwivedi’ from the Gurukul. While staying in Gurukul, he also learned Bengali and Urdu. He also received education in Indian exercises, sticks, swords, yuyutsu and pyramid building etc. While living there, he was also imprisoned for six months in the Hyderabad Arya-Satyagraha movement, part of the freedom struggle, in the year 1939.
Kapil Dev Dwivedi started writing books at the age of 35 and continued writing till a year before his death. He composed more than 80 books. He enriched Sanskrit literature with excellent works and was decorated with many honors and awards. More than 5 lakh people have learned Sanskrit language from his works. These texts are still an important medium for the propagation and spread of Sanskrit language. Till the last moments of his life, he did the important work of simplifying the difficult knowledge of the Vedas and making it accessible to the common people through Vedamrit Granthmala 40. Kapil Dev Dwivedi ji has received more than two dozen honors and awards from many institutions in the country and abroad.
For his significant contribution to Sanskrit literature, the Government of India honored him with ‘Padma Shri’ decoration in the year 1991. Received Guru Gangeshwarananda Vedaratna Award (2005) by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore. Maharishi Valmiki Samman (2010-2011) given by Delhi Sanskrit Academy. Awarded the President’s Award for service to Sanskrit language by the Government of India on August 15, 2010.
Kapil Dev Dwivedi ji died on August 28, 2011.
