Om Birla (English: Om Birla, born 4 December, 1962, Kota, Rajasthan) is an Indian politician and currently the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He has been elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from Kota Lok Sabha constituency. Om Birla has also been the MLA from Kota South for the thirteenth Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in 2008. Apart from being an active MLA and MP, he initiated and ran many philanthropic social welfare programs. During his political career, he has been the director of National Coal India Limited, New Delhi and Nehru Yuva Kendra.
Om Birla was born on December 4, 1962 in Kota, Rajasthan. His father’s name is Shri Krishna Birla and mother’s name is Late. Shakuntala is Devi. His wife’s name is Dr. Amita Birla. He has two sons and two daughters. Om Birla did his M.Com from Government Commerce College, Kota and then completed his education from Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer.
Om Birla has helped the disabled, cancer patients and thalassemia patients through various social organizations. He launched a major ‘Green Kota Forest Campaign’ to plant around one lakh trees in Kota for greenery. He led the movement to promote talented youth in rural areas by formulating a major scheme to organize sports and cultural programs in rural areas of the country through Nehru Yuva Kendra. He organized ceremonies in Kota and Bundi to honor more than 15 thousand retired officers, which was highly successful. Om Birla led the relief team to help the flood victims and provided shelter and medical facilities to the flood victims in Kota city on 15–16 August, 2004.
Om Birla’s political career started in the year 1978 from Government Higher Secondary School Gumanpura, Kota. He was the student union president here. After student politics, he was made the District President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Kota. He served as State President for 6 consecutive years. He has been the National Vice President of All India Janata Yuva Morcha. He has also been the Vice Chairman of the National Cooperative Consumers Union, New Delhi. He was also the Parliamentary Secretary in the government of Vasundhara Raje.
Om Birla became MP for the first time in the year 2014 in the 16th Lok Sabha elections. Then in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was again elected MP from the same seat. Before this, he became MLA from Kota in 2003, 2008 and 2013. In this way, he has been MLA twice and MP thrice. In 2014 he was appointed as Member, Petitions Committee, Member, Standing Committee on Energy and Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
