Mohan Dharia (English: Mohan Dharia, born: 14 February, 1925; died: 14 October, 2013) was a former Union Minister of India, lawyer and social worker. Mohan Dharia, who has been a member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha twice, is a well-known name in state level and national level politics. He served as Minister of State in 1971 during the tenure of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, but left the Congress after the imposition of Emergency in 1975. After this he joined the Bharatiya Lok Dal and became the Commerce Minister in 1977 during the tenure of Prime Minister Morarji Desai. Mohan Dharia was also the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

Born on February 14, 1925 in Mahad town of Raigarh district of Maharashtra, Dharia completed his schooling here before moving to Pune. He completed his legal studies from ILS Law College. After five decades of active life in politics, he became a dedicated environmentalist and worked for farmers’ rights.

Mohan Dharia’s organization Vanrai is working in the field of rural development. Working successfully in the field of saving forests, making barren lands fertile and conserving water, this organization has been successful in stopping the migration of villagers to the cities. Dharia was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award, for her social work in 2005, among many other honours. UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh honored Mohan Dharia with the Indira Gandhi National Unity Award. This award is given to people working for the country and society.

Mohan Dharia breathed his last on 14 October 2013 in the morning at Poona Hospital, Pune. Mohan Dharia was suffering from a long illness. Mohan Dharia leaves behind his wife Shashikala, sons Sushil and Ravindra and daughter Sadhna Shroff. According to doctors, 88-year-old Mohan Dharia was suffering from kidney problem for the last one year.
