History Nuts Desk !! Of. V. Krishna Rao (English: Kotikalapudi Venkata Krishna Rao, born- 16 July 1923; death- January 30, 2016) was former Indian Army Chief. He played an important role in the 1971 Bangladesh Mukti Sangram. Of. V. Krishna Rao was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in 1989–1990, when terrorism was at its peak in the state. He was the 14th head of the Indian Army and served for more than four decades in the army.
Of. V. Krishna Rao became part of the army on August 9, 1942. As a young officer, he served in Burma, North West Frontier and Balochistan. He served at both eastern and western Punjab places before partition in 1947, during which there was an atmosphere of violence. In the war against Pakistan in 1947-1948 in Jammu and Kashmir, K.K. V. Krishna Rao included he was the founder instructor of the National Defense Academy during 1949–1951. The army had said in a statement that K.K. V. Krishna Rao took over the command of the Mountain Division, which took part in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. He was awarded the ‘Param Vashistha Seva Medal’ for showing extraordinary leadership, courage, resolve and energy in this war.[1]
Of. V. Krishna Rao died on January 30, 2016. The then Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar had mourned his death, saying, ‘The country lost one of its most famous military leaders. He was a visionary who led efficiently, inspired an entire generation of soldiers and started modernization in the Indian Army in the early 1980s “.
