Laxmi Mall Singhvi (English: Laxmi Mall Singhvi, November 9, 1931, Jodhpur; death- October 6, 2007, New Delhi) was a well-known Indian poet, writer, linguist, constitutional expert and famous jurist. He made conscious, active and honest efforts towards the globalization of Hindi and its upgradation. He was an ambassador of Indian culture, a pioneer of Hindi in Britain and a source of inspiration for Hindi-speakers. Lakshmi Mall Singhvi, famous as an expert on the history and culture of Jainism, also wrote many books, many of which are in Hindi. He was honored with ‘Padma Bhushan’ by the Government of India.
Lakshmi Mall Singhvi was born on 9 November 1931 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Singhvi, a member of the Third Lok Sabha from 1962 to 1967, served as Advocate General of Rajasthan from 1972 to 1977 and India’s Ambassador to the UK for many years. In 1999 he was also elected a member of the Rajya Sabha. Lakshmi Mal Singhvi wrote the constitutions of Nepal, Bangladesh and South Africa. He is considered the father of many Lokpal and Lokayukta institutions in India.
Singhvi was the president and expert of ‘United Nations Human Rights Conference’ and ‘Commonwealth Legal Aid General Conference’. He is considered to be Britain’s most successful High Commissioner. He was the President of the Bar Association in the Supreme Court four times. He started ‘Vidhi Diwas’.
Dr. Lakshmi Mall Singhvi made conscious, active and honest efforts towards the globalization of Hindi and the upgradation of Hindi. As the Indian Ambassador, he not only tried to promote Indianism in Britain, but also tried to connect not only the migrants but also the foreigners with Indianness through the language of his country. Like a bridge between cultures, he remained steadfast and always active. He was an ambassador of Indian culture, a pioneer of Hindi in Britain and a source of inspiration for Hindi-speakers. It was Dr. Singhvi’s concept of celebrating ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas’ for the Indians spread across the world. He was the editor of ‘Sahitya Amrit’ and during his editorship, he gave momentum to the healthy literary tradition of Vidyanivas Mishra.
Lakshmi Mall Singhvi, president of many organizations of the Indian diaspora, also wrote many books. He was also a patron of many art and cultural organizations. Lakshmi Mall Singhvi, famous as an expert on Jain history and culture, wrote many books, many of which are in Hindi. Singhvi was also the Chairman of the High Level Committee of Overseas Indians. He had no equal in expressing the coded and difficult language of law and diplomacy in simple Hindi. He always played a leading role in organizing ‘World Hindi Conference’.
Lakshmi Mall Singhvi was decorated with ‘Padma Bhushan’ for her outstanding services in the year 1998. On December 8, 2008, the ‘Indian Post and Telegraph Department’ issued a postage stamp in his honour.
