According to the Padma Purana, once a scorpion came under the feet of Lord Vishnu. For his defense, the scorpion stung the Lord and the scorpion died prematurely after being pressed under Srihari’s leg. Lord Vishnu’s mind became very distracted by the death of a scorpion.
– The grief of the scorpion’s death was disturbing Srihari. Then Devarshi Narada came there and after knowing the whole thing, he said to Lord Shrihari, ‘You go to the earth on Magh Purnima and take a bath in the Ganges there, it will remove all the pain of your mind and will not cause the sin of killing the living being.’
After obeying Narada, Srihari changed the form and came to bathe in the Ganges on Magh Purnima. After bathing, he also donated to the sage sages. By doing this, he got rid of the fault of killing him. Since then, the tradition of bathing in the Ganges river started on Magh Purnima, which continues even today.
– It is believed that even today, Lord Vishnu changes the form of Ganga on Magh Purnima and comes to the Sangam coast for bathing. Therefore, fairs are also organized on the banks of the Ganges on this day. Apart from Ganga, devotees also reach other holy rivers to bathe. Those who fast on Maghi Purnima, they must hear this story.
