During the Kargil War on 29 August 1999, after obtaining special permission from the then Army Chief of Staff General V.P. Malik while being ODC, Sudhir Kumar Walia attacked the forests of Hamuda in Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir and died after killing 9 out of 20 terrorists.

Major Sudhir Kumar Walia, who made the supreme sacrifice for the country, was posthumously awarded the ‘Ashok Chakra’ in 2000. He was commissioned in the Jat Regiment. He was also sent to the United States for a special course, where he stood first. He was also awarded the ‘Army Medal’ in 1994.

After the Kargil war, the army received a major information that the terrorists were planning to carry out a major attack in the forests of Afruda in Kupwara. Therefore, Major Sudhir Kumar Walia took the leadership of the army squad to eliminate the terrorists, but Major Sudhir Walia was martyred in a face-to-face fight with the terrorists. Before being martyred, he had killed 9 out of 20 militants. In the meantime, he was seriously injured, but he did not lose courage and despite being seriously injured, he kept ordering his squad to kill the militants.

After killing the militants, he was taken to the hospital, but he sacrificed his life before reaching the hospital. He was posthumously awarded the ‘Ashok Chakra’ for his bravery. Major Sudhir Kumar Walia was earlier also awarded the Army Medal twice.[1]

Sudhir Kumar Walia, who had shown his valor in the Kargil war, was named ‘Rambo’ by his colleagues for his bravery. He was martyred in an encounter with terrorists in the jungles of Kupwara on 29 August 1999. He received 15 medals in 9 years of military service. He was also called a peace ambassador in Sri Lanka. Representatives from 70 countries had gone to the Pentagon, and he topped the list from India. The most important thing is that he received the Army Medal twice consecutively in the Indian Army, which is received by very few soldiers.
