Mouni Amavasya Katha –
According to the legend described in the scriptures, a Brahmin named Devaswamy lived with his family in Kanchipur city. Devaswami’s wife’s name was Dhanavati. He had seven sons and a daughter, named Gunwati. Once, Devaswami sent an astrologer to see his horoscope for the marriage of his daughter Gunwati. The astrologer, seeing the horoscope of quality, predicted that her husband would die after the marriage of quality.
Hearing this prediction, Devaswami got upset and asked the astrologer to tell some measures. The astrologer told Devaswamy that there is a husband in Sinhala Island, named Soma Dhobin. That woman can eliminate this defect by donating her virtue. Hearing this, Devaswamy sent quality to Soma Dhobin with his younger brother. Both siblings started thinking about crossing the sea.
When they did not find any way, they stopped to rest under a peepal tree during the journey. A vulture family lived on that tree. The children of the vulture listened to all the things of both those siblings and told their mother to help these two. Then the vulture’s mother got both siblings cross the sea and they reached Soma Dhobin’s house.
Quality assisted in the works of Soma Dhobin’s house and explained all her problems. After this, Soma went to the house of quality and worshiped her virtuous quality by worshiping her on her wedding day and it removed the valid defect in the horoscope of quality.
When Devaswamy asked Soma about his virtue, he said that on the day of Mauni Amavasya, I worshiped Lord Vishnu and 108 circumambulation, which averted the premature death of my husband and son. This story teaches that fast, charity, and worship of Lord Vishnu on Mauni Amavasya brings happiness and prosperity and virtue in life.
