Munawwar Rana (English: Munawwar Rana, born- 26 November, 1952; died- 14 January, 2024) was an Indian Urdu poet. He was awarded the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ in the year 2014 for his poem ‘Shahdaba’. Munawwar Rana wrote in Urdu and Awadhi, but avoided the Persian and Arabic terminology that distinguishes Urdu from Hindi. This makes his poetry accessible to an Indian audience and explains his popularity in poetry conferences held in non-Urdu regions. Munawwar Rana was very famous for the poems written on his mother. It is believed that no one could beat him in writing couplets for his mother.

Munawwar Rana was born on November 26, 1952 in Rae Bareli district of Uttar Pradesh. Although he was born in Uttar Pradesh, he spent most of his life in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was an Urdu poet, but he mainly used Awadhi and Hindi words in his couplets, due to which he gained popularity among the Indian people. Munawwar Rana was a poet of fine style. The world’s most famous poet Munawwar Rana died on January 14, 2024 at PGI, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He breathed his last at around 11:00 pm at the age of 71. His health had remained critical for a long time, due to which he was admitted to Lucknow PGI. Munawwar Rana was very famous for the poems written on his mother. It is believed that no one could beat him in writing couplets for his mother. Munavvar Rana was on dialysis in PGI for a long time. There was a lot of infection in the lungs, due to which he was also put on ventilator. He had kidney problems for a long time.
