Nalini Jaywant was born on 18 February 1926 in the city of Bombay (present -day Mumbai) of British India. Ratan Bai, the mother of Nalini’s father and actress Shobhana Samarth (Nutan and Tanuja’s mother), was siblings in the relationship, that is why Nalini seemed to be the sister’s sister of Shobhana Samarth. Virendra Desai was the son of these Chamanlal Desai. He had a company ‘National Studios’. One day both father-son reached the cinema hall to watch the film. During the show, both of them looked at a girl, who was spreading her glow in all the crowds. It was Nalini Jaywant, whose age was barely 13-14 years old at that time. Both father-son duo chose this girl in the heart and got lost in his next film and got lost in thoughts. When the film ended and when that girl disappeared with her family, both did not even know about it.
One day Virendra Desai reached her house to meet actress Shobhana Samarth and saw that Nalini was present there. On seeing Nalini, her eyes glowed and the calves blossomed. Actually Shobhana Samarth, who was later known as actress Nutan and Tanuja’s mother and Kajol’s grandmother, was the daughter of Nalini Jaywant’s maternal uncle. This time Virendra Desai proposed the film in front of Nalini without delay. For Nalini, this mind was like a wish being fulfilled. There was only a fear of father, who was strict opponent of films. But Virendra Desai convinced him. Money was a big reason behind this believing. At that time, the financial condition of the Jaywant family was not good. He also got shelter in a small house of one of his relatives to live. Thus Nalini Jaywant’s first film was ‘Radhika’, which was released in 1941. Directed by Virendra Desai, other actors of this film were Harish, Jyoti, Kanhaiyalal, Bhudo Advani etc. The music in the film was by Ashok Ghosh. Seven of the ten songs of this film had Nalini Jaywant’s voice.
Success
After the film ‘Radhika’, a film was released under the direction of Mehboob Khan this year. The film featured Sheikh Mukhtar in the lead role with Nalini. Together, Nann-Si Meena Kumari, who was a child artist in this film by the name of ‘Baby Meena’. In this film, music composer Anil Biswas had lost four songs from Nalini Jaywant. Out of these four songs, Vajahat Mirza had a song written- ‘Don’t eat Bhaiya Mere Paan’, which became very popular. It was again in 1941 that the film directed by Virendra Desai came again, in which Mukesh was in the role of Nayak. नलिनी जयवंत कभी-कभी घर की ज़रूरत की चीज़ें ख़रीदने बाज़ार जाती थीं। अशोक कुमार से भी एक अरसे तक जीवंत संपर्क बना रहा, लेकिन बाद में कुछ ऐसा हुआ, जिसके बारे में किसी को कोई ख़बर नहीं। नलिनी जयवंत ने ख़ुद को घर में ही कैद कर लिया। घर के सामने ही रह रहे अशोक कुमार तक से आखि़र में मिलना छोड़ दिया। 20 दिसम्बर, 2010 को नलिनी जयवंत का देहांत हो गया। मोहल्ले के लोगों को उनके देहांत की ख़बर तब हुई, जब एक चौकीदार ने एक व्यक्ति को उस घर से शव को गाड़ी में ले जाते देखा। बाद में संदीप जयवंत नामक व्यक्ति का बयान आया कि वह नलिनी जी का भतीजा है और उसने नलिनी जी की ही इच्छा के अनुसार चुपचाप उनका दाह-संस्कार कर दिया है
