Nar Bahadur Bhandari (English: Nar Bahadur Bhandari, born- October 5, 1940, Malbesi village, Sikkim; death- July 16, 2017, New Delhi) was the former second Chief Minister of Sikkim. He was the Chief Minister of the state from October 18, 1979 to May 11, 1984, then from March 8, 1985 to November 25, 1989 and again from November 26, 1989 to May 17, 1994.
Before coming into politics, Nar Bahadur Bhandari used to teach in a school. In 1979, he became the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the first time. He formed ‘Sikkim Janata Parishad Party’ in 1977. In the year 1984, Nar Bahadur Bhandari dissolved the Sikkim Janata Parishad and formed a new party ‘Sikkim Sangram Parishad’ (SSP). Nar Bahadur Bhandari was the Chief Minister of the state in the years 1985 and 1989. At that time he stood in the elections on SSP ticket. He remained the president of the party till his death.[1]
He was also the former president of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee. Nar Bahadur Bhandari was the first Gorkha person to become the Chief Minister of a state. On October 18, 1979, Nar Bahadur Bhandari was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Sikkim. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed grief over the demise of former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari. In a tweet, Modi said, ‘The work done by him towards the development of Sikkim will always be remembered’.
