literary introduction

Narendra Kohli is a novelist, story writer, playwright and satirist. Despite all this, he is quite different from his contemporary writers. His contribution to the prosperity of literature and progress of society is evident. He has written famous stories; But they are completely original. They are modern; But do not imitate the West. Reaches the roots of Indianness, but is not traditionalist. Narendra Kohli’s stories started being published in 1960, in which he was highlighting the ironies of the society through simple family pictures and incidents. He started writing satire around 1965 AD. His language had become distorted, and the ironies of the country and politics were coming to the fore. In his works written in those days, he showed the inhumanity, cruelty and irrationality of social and political life. The entire satirical literature of Hindi is a witness to the fact that there is no other place in our generation with such experimentalism, diversity and intensity as him. Narendra Kohli wrote a huge novel of 1800 pages in four volumes taking material from Ramkatha. Perhaps, this is the first novel based on the complete story of Ram, written in any language. It is a novel, hence contemporary, progressive, modern and logical. Its basic material was taken from the cultural tradition of India, hence it depicts the sublime values of life, the greatness of man and the boundlessness of life. The Hindi reader was shocked and woke up from a deep sleep. He became free from the duality of his values and intellect. He got answers to his stubborn questions and his doubts were resolved.

Narendra Kohli wrote a novel – ‘Abhigyan’ based on the story of Krishna. The story is political. When the powerful Shri Krishna publicly accepts the poor and helpless Sudama as his friend, then Sudama’s credibility in the social, business and political fields immediately increases. But the backbone of this work is the ‘karma principle’ of Bhagavad Gita. There is no afterlife, no heaven and hell, no afterlife in this work. The ‘karma theory’ has been explained in accordance with scientific principles, on the basis of senses and intellect, within a single life on this earth. That too in the form of an interesting section of an interesting novel. Narendra Kohli started writing his new novel ‘Maha Samar’ based on the Mahabharata story. ‘Mahabharata’ is a huge work, which presents Indian life, thinking, philosophy and behavior in an exemplary form. Narendra Kohli has completely brought this work to life in his era. In this novel, he has presented life in all its vastness in a very original manner. They give solutions to the real questions of life on the basis of cognition and logic. Characters like Yudhishthir, Krishna, Kunti, Draupadi, Balram, Arjun, Bhima and Karna etc. were presented in a very new form.

novel series

Narendra Kohli surprised the readers by starting another novel series. This is, ‘Todo Kara Todo’. The title is a translation of a line from a song by Rabindranath Tagore; But the novel is related to the biography of Swami Vivekananda. Swamiji’s life is an incident of the recent past. All the events of his life are authentically recorded in history. There is no special space for the novelist’s own imagination or thinking in this. Identification with the personality and thinking of their hero is the only path for them. On every page of this juicy novel by Narendra Kohli, the reader is astonished to see the novelist’s identification with his hero. Swami Vivekananda’s life was a meaningful struggle to transcend constraints and boundaries. The bonds may be of nature, society, politics, religion or spirituality. In the words of Narendra Kohli,

“The charm of Swami Vivekananda’s personality is not attraction, it is magic… magic that speaks headlong. No sensitive person can go near him and remain hypnotized and the young mind goes crazy with excitement. Which Swamiji was the embodiment of the ultimate development and it was unfair to tie him to any one era, region or organization. Too.”
