Nimmi (English: NIMMI, born- 18 February, 1933, Agra, Uttar Pradesh; death- 25 March 2020, Mumbai, Maharashtra) has been one of the famous actresses of Indian Hindi films. His real name was ‘Nawab Banu’. This innocent Bollywood actress of Bollywood was introduced to the film world by Raj Kapoor. However, Nimmi’s film started as a supporting actress with Raj Kapoor and Nargis starrer ‘Barsaat’ (1949). It is also interesting that Raj Kapoor’s eye on this beautiful actress was seen when she was watching the shooting of a film. Nimmi was the same as her contemporary heroines Madhubala, Nargis, Nutan, Meena Kumari, Suraiya and Geeta Bali. Nimmi is considered a compelling actress with beautiful eyes. His role in the film was never taken as a coach. He was filmed on memorable songs of many films on him. Director K. Asif’s film ‘Love and God’ was his last film.
Birth
Actress Nimmi was born on 18 February 1933 in Agra. Her mother’s name was Waheedan, who was a famous singer and actress of her era. Nimmi’s father Abdul Hakim was the contractor in the military. When Nimmi was only nine years old, her mother died. Her father Abmimi Abbottabad[1]Sent to grandmother to stay. Nimmi’s father left Agra himself and came to Meerut.
Mumbai arrival
After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, Nimmi and her grandmother were also among the crowd of refugees. Nimmi came to Bombay (present Mumbai) with her grandmother, where her aunt Jyoti lived, who worked in Hindi films. Now Bombay was the new home of Nimmi, where a refugee girl was ready to register her name in the pages of history.
Marriage
Nimmi never went to school. Therefore, household education confined them to Urdu. Although she had learned English while working in films, but she used to talk in her own tongue. One day Nimmi met writer Ali Raza while working. Ali Raza helped Nimmi to rehearsed the dialogue. Later, Ali Raza created the hobby of poetry in him. Later this poetry turned into friendship and love, then Nimmi married writer-scripture Ali Raza.[2]
Film beginning
In 1948, the famous filmmaker-director Mehboob Khan was shooting for his film ‘Andaz’ in Central Studios Bombay. Nargis was with Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor in ‘Andaz’. All three worked together for the first and last time. Nimmi was also present here. She often came to see shooting. It was here that Raj Kapoor saw him. In those days, Raj Kapoor was looking for a new face for the film ‘Barsaat’ (1949). After seeing Nimmi’s shy behavior on the set of ‘Andaz’, Nimmi was taken with actor Premnath in ‘Barsaat’. In the film ‘Barsaat’, Nimmi loves heartless urban love Nath man. Nimmi played an innocent hill Gaderin in this film.
Success
The film ‘Barsaat’ made history at the box office. ‘Barsaat’ was unprecedented and commercial success. Despite the presence of established and popular stars Nargis, Raj Kapoor and Premnath, Nimmi played her character well. The popular title songs of the film were filmed on the song “Barsat Mein Hum Mile Tum”, “Jia Bekarar Hai”, “Thin Qamar Hai” all were filmed on Nimmi. For the first time in ‘Barsaat’, the scene of rape came out in Hindi films and this rape became classic. The climax of the film also revolted around the fledgling actress. The huge success of ‘Barsaat’ made Nimmi a star. Nimmi worked with peak heroes like Raj Kapoor (Bhawanra), Dev Anand (punishment, stunning). After the success of films like ‘Didar’ (1951) and ‘Daag’ (1952), he proved to be a very popular and reliable screen pair with Dilip Kumar.
Work with established actresses
Nimmi did ‘Barsaat’ and ‘Didar’ films with Nargis. He worked with Madhubala in films like ‘Amar’, ‘Shama’ with Suraiya, ‘Usha Kiran’ with Geeta Bali and ‘Char Dil Char Rahan’ with Meena Kumari. Nimmi acted in the film ‘Bedardi’ (1951) and sang her own songs. However, this sequence did not continue. Mehboob Khan took Nimmi with Dilip Kumar, Premnath and Nadira in the film ‘Aan’ (1952). ‘Aan’ was Nadira’s first film. The film was India’s first technicler film. Apart from this, the budget of the film was very big. The film was also released simultaneously abroad along with India. At the time of this film, Nimmi’s popularity was that the film was earlier shown to the edited film financiers and distributors. He complained that Nimmi’s character had died very quickly. Therefore, Sapna was shot in ‘Aan’ so that Nimmi would be seen on screen for a long time.
London premiere of the film ‘Aan’
Nimmi’s death and dance were popular in ‘Aan’. It was the first Hindi film to be a very grand premiere in London. Nimmi was also present here. The English version of the film ‘Aan’ was ‘Savez Princess’. Nimmi met several Western film personalities including El Flin. When Flin tried to kiss Nimmi’s hand, he pulled his hand away, and said- “I am an Indian girl, you can’t kiss.” The incident came into the limelight and London’s press introduced Nimmi as a “unaccompanied girl of India”. After the success of ‘Aan’, Mehboob Khan took Nimmi in his next film ‘Amar’ (1954).[3]
Other film successes
The film ‘Amar’ also featured Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. The scene of rape was also filmed on Nimmi in ‘Amar’, although the film could not get commercial success. Nimmi opened the production house through the film ‘Danka’ (1954). Also made a film named ‘Kundan’ (1955), including Sohrab Modi with the new fledged Sunil Dutt. In the film ‘Kundan’, Nimmi played a memorable dual role of mother and daughter. ‘Udan Khatola’ (1955) was the last film after five films with Dilip Kumar. The film was the biggest box office success of Nimmi’s cine career. The songs of ‘Udan Khatola’ are still popular today. In the year 1956, ‘Basant Bahar’ and ‘Bhai Bhai’ were two of his big successful films. At the age of 24 in 1957, Nimmi received the critics award of Best Actress for her role in ‘Bhai Bhai’. In the 1950s, Nimmi worked with famous directors, including Chetan Anand’s ‘Anjali’, K.K. A. Abbas’s ‘Char Dil Char Rahan’ and Vijay Bhatt’s ‘Angulimal’ were.
Friendship with Madhubala
Directed by Mehboob Khan, the film ‘Amar’ (1954) was a film of its time, which is probably not liked by the audience for this reason. But the film was appreciated by Madhubala and Nimmi, the work of these two actresses. In the film, Madhubala worked at Meena Kumari’s place. Meena Kumari left the film due to estrangement from Mehboob Khan after shooting the film for 15 days. Due to this, Madhubala and Nimmi got a chance to work together. Nimmi and Madhubala had a deep friendship on the set of the film ‘Amar’. She used to share her food as well as makeup room and her experiences. Both had become such a deep friend that there were discussions between Dilip Kumar, who were in the lead role in that film.
Wrong decision
Nimmi also took risks at that time and made some mistakes. She appeared as a prostitute in the film ‘Char Dil Char Rahane’ (1959), while B.B. R. He rejected Chopra’s ‘Sadhana’ (1958). In the year 1963, ‘Woh Kaun Thi’ Nimmi turned down. The film ‘Sadhana’ brightened Vyjayanti Mala and ‘Woh Kaun Thi’ gave Sadhana fame. Both times Nimmi lost to spiritual practice. Once from the film ‘Sadhana’, Sadhana actress for the second time. Nimmi again took a wrong decision. The opportunity was of Harnam Singh Rawal’s film ‘Mere Mehboob’. Arrival of new heroines
In the 1960s, model actresses like Sadhana, Nanda, Asha Parekh, Mala Sinha and Saira Bano started becoming a heroine in Hindi films. The concept of the heroine was now changing in Indian cinema. In ‘Pooja Ke Phool’ (1964), the role of a blind girl and ‘silent wife’ in ‘Akashdeep’ (1965) with Ashok Kumar was released. Nimmi’s popularity as a star began to decrease. Famous actor of the 60s Nimmi died on 25 March, 2020 (day Wednesday) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Nimmi was 87 years old. A few days before his death, he celebrated his 87th birthday on 18 March. Nimmi was ill for the last several months, after which he breathed his last at 6 pm in Sarla Nursing Home in Mumbai.
