On the death anniversary of Indian politician Romesh Bhandari, know his biography

Romesh Bhandari (English: Romesh Bhandari born- 29 March, 1928 Lahore; died- 7 September, 2013 New Delhi) was the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and former Governor of Tripura, Goa and Uttar Pradesh. He was India’s ambassador to Iraq from 1974-1976.[1]

Romesh Bhandari was born on 29 March 1928 in Lahore. He received his education in Lahore, Punjab University, Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1950, he joined the Indian Foreign Service and was appointed Deputy Consul of India in the Indian Consulate in New York. He was the private secretary of India’s Defense Minister Shri Krishna Menon. During his tenure in the Indian Foreign Service, Bhandari was posted in Delhi for many years. In 1970-1971, he was Minister in the Indian Embassy in Moscow. From 1971-1974, he was India’s Ambassador to Thailand and represented India in the then “ECS” and “ESCAP” organizations. From 1974-1976, he was India’s Ambassador to Iraq. Thereafter, from February 1977 to July 1979, he held the post of Additional Secretary in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. On 1 February 1985, he was appointed Foreign Secretary of India and retired from this post on 31 March 1986. After retirement, he was appointed Chairman of the Foreign Department of the All India Congress Committee (I). He became Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on 4 August 1988 and resigned from this post on 13 December 1990. On 15 August 1993, he was appointed Governor of Tripura and he held this post till 16 June 1995. He was Governor of Goa from 16 June 1995 to 19 July 1996. On 19 July 1996, he was appointed Governor of Uttar Pradesh. And he served on this post till 17 March 1998. Romesh Bhandari died on 7 September 2013 in New Delhi.
