Padmini was born on 12 June 1932 in Thiruvananthapuram. She had two more sisters, Lalita and Ragini. These three sisters were called ‘Travancore Sisters’. Padmini entered the world of acting at the age of 16. After coming into films, Padmini worked extensively in Tamil and Telugu to Hindi, Malayalam and even Russian language films.
In her career, Padmini worked with Rajkumar, Prem Nazir, Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, NT Rama Rao and Rekha’s father and actor Gemini Ganesan. In Bollywood, Padmini appeared in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ and ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’. In 1960, Padmini was paired with Raj Kapoor in Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai. Padmini started her acting career in 1948 with the Bollywood film ‘Kalpana’. After this, she worked in films in other languages.
Padmini also remained in the headlines due to her rivalry with actress Vyjayanthimala. The reason for this was dance. Vyjayanthimala was also a top actress of that era and like Padmini, she was trained in Bharatnatyam. Due to this, there was always tension between them. In the 1984 film ‘Raj Tilak’, there was a dance face-off between Padmini and Vyjayanthimala. Padmini gave birth to a son in 1963, named Prem Ramachandran, who currently works with Warner Bros. In 1977, Padmini opened a classical dance school in New Jersey, named ‘Padmini School of Arts’. Today, Padmini’s school is counted among the largest classical dance institutions in America.
