The incident is of 1998. CPI(M) leader Ajit Sarkar, one of his associates Asfullah Khan and the driver were fired upon indiscriminately. All three died in this incident. Pappu Yadav’s name came up in this. At that time Pappu Yadav used to be MP from Purnia Lok Sabha seat. After being named in this incident, his political career ended and he went to jail. In this case, the case continued in the special court of CBI. He remained in jail for a long time. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2008 he was convicted of murder. Pappu Yadav, Rajan Tiwari and Anil Yadav were sentenced to life imprisonment in the special CBI court. Punishment results in cancellation of their membership. He was sent to Tihar Jail. He remained in jail for many years.
Pappu Yadav appealed against the decision in Patna High Court. After this, he got relief from the court in 2013. He was acquitted due to lack of evidence. After becoming MLA in 1990, he was a Lok Sabha member five times. For the first time in 1991, he contested the elections as an independent candidate from Purnia and won. After this he became an independent MP from Purnia in 1996 and 1999. In 2004, Lalu Prasad Yadav gave him RJD ticket from Madhepura and he won for the fourth time. His membership was canceled after he was found guilty of murder in 2008. After getting relief from Patna High Court in 2013, Pappu Yadav again contested elections from Madhepura on RJD ticket for the fifth time in 2014 and won for the fifth time.
In 2015, after Tejashwi Yadav’s statements, he got angry and separated himself from RJD and formed his own ‘Jan Adhikar Party’. In 2019, he contested the elections from his party but lost. Pappu Yadav’s attitude changed after coming out of jail in 2013.
