Biography

Pyarelal’s childhood was full of struggle. His mother died at a young age. His father ‘Pandit Ramprasad ji’ used to play trumpet and wanted Pyarelal to learn violin. His father’s financial condition was not good, he used to go from house to house whenever he got a chance to play and would take Pyare along with him. His innocent face attracted everyone. Once Pandit ji took him to Lata Mangeshkar’s house. Lata ji was so happy with Pyare’s violin playing that she gave him 500 rupees as a reward which was a huge amount in those days. He used to practice violin for hours. On the basis of his hard work, he got a job in the orchestra of Mumbai’s ‘Ranjit Studio’ where he got a monthly salary of 85 rupees. Now his family started being supported with this money. He enrolled in a night school for seventh grade studies but due to inability to afford the monthly fee of 3 rupees, he had to leave the school. Even difficult circumstances did not dampen his spirits; he was very ambitious and his dream was to make a name for himself through his music and to travel around the country and abroad.[1]

“I joined a music group (madrigal singers) to learn music, but there I did not get a chance to perform on stage because I was a Hindu. They used to encourage Parsi and Christian musicians more. But I had to learn, so I endured everything and stayed there. But my father could not tolerate all this anymore. He himself took the responsibility of teaching poor children for free and he used to take them to musician Naushad saheb’s house as well. My father taught about 1500 children”

“In those days, Lakshmikant used to work with ‘Pandit Husnlal Bhagatram’, he was 3 years older than me. Slowly we started visiting each other’s houses. We used to play together and sometimes cricket and had long discussions on music. Because of our similar hobbies and dreams, we became good friends very quickly.” “C. Ramachandra ji once called me and said that I am going to give you a big work. He had already talked to Lakshmi about this. We worked together for two and a half years in Chennai. The film was “Devata” the actors were Gemini Ganesan, Vaijayanti Mala, and Savitri, for which we got 6000 rupees. This was the first time I saw so much money together. With this money, I bought a gold ring for my father which cost 1200 rupees.”[1]
