Sampurnanand (English: Sampurnanand, born: January 1, 1889, Varanasi; died: January 10, 1969) was a famous freedom fighter and politician, who was also the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Governor of Rajasthan. Dr. Sampurnanand was a skilled and fearless politician and a litterateur and teacher with all-round talent. He had deep knowledge of history, mythology, philosophy, politics, sociology etc. He also had great interest in spiritual subjects. He was a person of socialist thoughts and along with Acharya Narendra Dev, he had a major role in the formation of ‘Samajwadi Party’ within the Congress in 1934.

Famous politician and scholar Dr. Sampurnanand was born on January 1, 1889 in Varanasi. His father’s name was Munshi Vijayanand and mother’s name was Anandi Devi. Grandfather Bakshi Sadanand was the Diwan of the King of Kashi. With the blessings of Kinaram Baba, the word ‘Anand’ started appearing in the names of all men. Father Munshi Vijayanand was a government employee. Sampurnanand ji did B.Sc. at the age of 18. Passed the examination. With his hard work he also acquired good knowledge of Persian and Sanskrit. LT After completing his studies, he turned towards teaching. Taught in Harishchandra High School and Mission School for a few days. Then he became a science teacher in Prem Mahavidyalaya, Vrindavan, established by Raja Mahendra Pratap. After some time, he became a mathematics teacher at Rajkumar’s Daily College, Indore. In 1918, the Maharaja of Bikaner appointed him the Principal of Dugar College and called him to Bikaner. He remained in Bikaner till 1921 and then resigned to participate in the non-cooperation movement. After coming to Varanasi, along with the national movement, you also turned towards literary service. He edited a Hindi magazine named ‘Maryada’ and an English daily named ‘Today’. In 1923, he was appointed Professor of Philosophy at Kashi Vidyapeeth and remained on this post till independence.
Contribution to freedom struggle and politics
Dr. Sampurnanand participated in every freedom struggle and went to jail every time. In 1927, he was elected member of the Provincial Legislative Council on the Swarajya Party ticket. He was elected to the state Legislative Assembly in 1937. After the resignation of Pyare Lal Sharma, a member of Govind Ballabh Pantji’s first cabinet, Sampurnanand ji was taken into the Council of Ministers as the Education Minister. He also served as the Minister of Home, Economy and Information. Dr. Sampurnanand became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1955 when Govind Ballabh Pant joined the Central Government and he resigned from this post in 1961. In 1962 he was made the Governor of Rajasthan. And retired from this post in 1967.

He was the secretary of Uttar Pradesh Congress three times. He presided over the Pune Hindi Sahitya Sammelan of 1940. During his ministry, he started many schemes for the improvement of Hindi. ‘Hindi Committee’ (now called Hindi Institute) was started by him. Sanskrit University of Varanasi was also built during his rule. He was a person of very independent and fearless thoughts. He had many times publicly opposed Nehruji’s policy in matters of language and international politics.

Dr. Sampurnanand has left a deep impression as a writer. He has written about 45 books, most of which are in Hindi language. It was he who wrote the first biography of Gandhiji under the name ‘Karmaveer Gandhi’. His other major texts are-
