Especially due to acting with Uttam Kumar, she became very popular all over West Bengal. The pair of Uttam-Suchitra is still considered the best pair of Bengali cinema. She is the first Indian actress to be awarded an award at an international film festival.

Suchitra Sen was born on April 6, 1931 in Pabna district of Bengal, now in Bangladesh. Suchitra’s father Karunamoy Dasgupta was the head master of a local school. It was also a strange irony that Suchitra’s first film ‘Shesh Kathay (Bengali)’ was never released.
career
Suchitra Sen started her career in 1952 with the Bengali film ‘Shesh Kothai’. In 1955, she played the role of ‘Paro’ in Bimal Roy’s Hindi film ‘Devdas’. Dilip Kumar was with him in this. No one can forget the pairing of veteran actors Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. Both of them worked together in 30 films from 1953 to 1975. The 1959 Bengali film ‘Deep Jawale Jaai’ is counted among Suchitra’s best films.
Ten years later, this film was made in Hindi, in which Suchitra’s role was played by Waheeda Rehman. Suchitra’s role in the 1975 film ‘Aandhi’ was said to be inspired by Indira Gandhi. Suchitra gave such a tremendous performance that she was nominated for Best Actress. Although Suchitra was not chosen as the Best Actress, her co-star Sanjeev Kumar definitely became the Best Actor. Her daughter Munmun Sen also followed her mother’s footsteps and entered Hindi films along with Bengali films. After an acting career of almost 25 years, he distanced himself from the big screen in 1978 to such an extent that he completely separated himself from the limelight.

After Kanan Devi, no other heroine of Bengali cinema could achieve fame like Suchitra. In the era of black-and-white films, Suchitra’s tremendous acting made her the queen of the hearts of the audience. Suchitra Sen became the first Bengali actress to be honored at an International Film Festival. She received the Best Actress Award at the Moscow Film Festival in 1963 for ‘Saat Paake Bandha’. Suchitra Sen played the role of Paro in ‘Devdas’ in 1955, which was also her first Hindi film. In 2005, Suchitra Sen refused to accept the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in order to remain secluded and away from the public eye. Suchitra Sen starrer ‘Aandhi’ was banned in Gujarat just 20 weeks after its release. The ban was lifted only after the Janata Party came to power in 1977. Since her retirement from films, Suchitra Sen remained away from the public eye and devoted her time to Ramakrishna Mission. Suchitra Sen had rejected Satyajit Ray’s offer for the film ‘Devi Chowdhury’. After which Satyajit Ray never made this film. R.K. Suchitra Sen has also rejected Raj Kapoor’s film proposal under the banner. She was nominated twice for Best Actress at Filmfare. For the film ‘Mamta’ in 1963 and for the film ‘Aandhi’ in 1976.[3]

Suchitra Sen was the first Bengali actress to win an International Film Festival Award. She won the Best Actress Award for her film ‘Saat Paake Bandha’ at the 1963 Moscow Film Festival. Received Padmashree award by the Government of India in 1972. In 2012, he was given the highest award ‘Bungo Bibhushan’ of the Government of West Bengal.

Suchitra Sen died in a hospital in Kolkata on Friday 17 January 2014 at the age of 82 due to a heart attack. Suchitra Sen was suffering from a disease called diabetes.
