Sudhi Ranjan Das (English: Sudhi Ranjan Das, born- 1 October, 1894; died- 18 September, 1977) was the former fifth Chief Justice of India. He was the Chief Justice of India from 1 February, 1956 to 30 September, 1959. He also served as the President of ‘The Statesman’.
Sudhi Ranjan Das was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Rakhalchandra Das and Binodini Das. He attended Patha Bhavana in Shantiniketan, where he was one of the first four students of Rabindranath Tagore. After completing his intermediate examination from Scottish Church College, Sudhi Ranjan Das moved to Bangabasi College, which was affiliated to the University of Calcutta. He graduated from here. Later Sudhi Ranjan Das went to London for further education in law, from where he graduated first. In 1942, he was promoted as an additional judge of the Calcutta High Court. He became a judge of the Calcutta High Court in 1944. Sudhi Ranjan Das also served as the Chief Justice of the Punjab High Court from 1949 to 1950. He held the post of Chief Justice of India, the highest judicial post in the country, for more than three years. Earlier, he served twice as Acting Chief Justice of India.
