Boney Kapoor launched two films in December 1987 – ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ and ‘Prem’. Tabu was signed opposite Sanjay Kapoor in Prem. This film took 8 years to be made and it proved to be the biggest flop of Boney Kapoor’s production career, but after this film, Tabu’s career took off.
In an interview given to Mid-Day, Tabu talked about the beginning of her film journey. The actress said, ‘We used to spend summer holidays at my grandmother’s house. Since my mother’s elder brother Ishaan Arya was a cinematographer. He shot Garam Hawa (1973), Bazaar (1982). I grew up with his sons Sameer and Sagar. We were like brother and sister. Once my sister Farah and I were in Dev Anand Sahab’s office, where we were taking her screen test, because he thought she was very beautiful, so we took her screen test as well.
Tabu further said, ‘One day we got a call from Yash Chopra. He told my mother about his desire to cast my sister in the film ‘Faasle’. Since Dev Saheb had shown him his screen test. My mother didn’t know who Yash Chopra was, so she asked my aunt (Shabana). Everyone was really excited. Thus, my sister and mother came to Bombay. I loved Hyderabad and my school, so I lived there with my aunt for three years. By then my sister had done many films and had become a big star. Tabu said, ‘And because of my sister, my interest in films increased and I also showed interest in acting in films.
Tabu further said, ‘Shekhar Kapoor uncle saw me and said that I have to debut with his film ‘Prem’, which I refused. He insisted that I do just one film and then he would send me abroad to study, which never happened. I did the film, but he left the project.
Very few people know that Tabu’s first role as an actress was in the Telugu film ‘Coolie No. 1’ with South superstar Venkatesh, which was released in 1991. Tabu’s first Hindi film as a lead actress was Pehla Pehla Pyaar, which was released in theaters in 1994.
Tabu tasted success with her role in Vijaypath (1994) opposite Ajay Devgan. Tabu also received the ‘Filmfare Best Female Debut Award’ for this film. After this, many of his films came which did not perform well at the box office. Let us tell you that Tabu studied in St. Ann’s High School, Hyderabad. She moved to Mumbai in 1983. After this he studied at St. Xavier’s College for two years. Tabu was born on 4 November 1971 in a Hyderabadi Muslim family to Jamal Hashmi and Rizwana. Veteran actress Shabana Azmi is the sister of Jamal Hashmi. That means Tabu seems to be Shabana Azmi’s niece.
