Entertainment News Desk !! Talat Mahmood (English: Talat Mahmood; born- 24 February 1924, Lucknow; death- 9 May 1998, Mumbai) was India’s famous playback singer and film actor. He gained a lot of fame as a ghazal singer. Initially, he sang songs under the name of ‘Tapan Kumar’. Music was a passion for Mahmud, a very gentle and humble nature, while his performance recognized him as a rich artist of versatility. Talat Mahmood, who started his journey as a ghazal singer at the age of just sixteen, also acted in Hindi films with well-known actresses of that era- Suraiya, Nutan and Mala Sinha. He was awarded the title of ‘Padmabhushan’ in 1992 for his contribution.
Birth and education
Talat Mahmud was born on 24 February 1924 in a family Muslim family in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). His father’s name was Manzoor Mahmood. Talat Mahmood was the sixth child after three sisters and two brothers. He got a cultured environment of music and art at home. His aunt’s ‘lurjish’ of the voice of Talat[1] Was liked. The nephew started getting attracted to singing after getting encouragement from Talat Mahmud Bua. Due to this trend, he enrolled in ‘Morris Sangeet Vidyalaya’, currently ‘Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyalaya’.
First singing
Initially Talat Mahmood started singing from Lucknow AIR. He recorded his first song for Akashvani for the first time at the age of sixteen. The song gained a lot of fame in the city of Lucknow. After this, a team of famous music company HMV came to Lucknow and along with this song, three more songs were lost with Talat. This success shone the fate of Talat. This was a period when melodious singing and attractive personality used to dream of becoming a young hero.
Mumbai arrival
Talat Mahmud moved to Kolkata in 1944 to want to become a singer and actor. He initially sang songs under the name of Tapan Kumar, including many Bengali songs. In fact, as soon as the camera came in front of the camera, Talat Mahmud used to get under stress, while feeling comfortable in singing. She first performed playback in Kolkata’s film ‘Swayamsiddha’ (1945). Inspired by his success, Talat later came to Mumbai and met composer Anil Vishwas.
Fame
Initially, he did not find any special success in Mumbai, but later the films ‘Rakhi’ (1949), ‘Anmol Ratan’ (1950) and ‘Arju’ (1950) gave special glow to his career. The Ghazal of the film ‘Arju’ “Ae Dil Mein Hain Phan Jahan Jahan Jahan Ho …” earned immense popularity. It was here that Talat and Dilip Kumar became a unique coincidence, which was repeated in many films. Talat Mahmood also acted in Hindi Tairh films and three Bangla films. He sang songs in 17 Indian languages. Famous composer Naushad also gave Talat a chance to sing for the film ‘Babul’. His song filmed on actor Dilip Kumar was “Aankhen Dil Hua Deewana Koi Ka …” was highly appreciated. After this, Talat consecutively allowed hits in many films and earned a lot of name. By the sixties, the demand for the voice of Talat started decreasing. At the same time, his song for the film ‘Sujata’ is “Jal Jal Ko …” Kub Chala and were liked. Talat Mahmood last sung for ‘Jahanara’ in Hindi films. The music of this film was composed by Madan Mohan.
Contribution
Talat Mahmud gave honorable heights to ‘Ghazal’ singing. Always selected only the Ghazals of excellent terminology. He was always avoided by cheap speaking songs. Even the lyricists and musicians were apprehensive before giving him composition whether Talat would like him or not. He was quite disappointed with the modern form of Ghazal. He had strict objections to the jokes especially in the middle. According to the statement of Mahmud as Talat- “Ghazal is a song of love, why are we making it market. Its purity should not be destroyed.” Madan Mohan, Anil Vishwas and Khayyam’s tunes are fascinated by him. It was his specialty to introduce the hard -difficult restrictions with subtlety.
Singing abroad
Talat Mahmood was the first Indian singer to be held abroad (in East Africa) in 1956. Apart from this, he also gave programs in London’s ‘Royal Albert Hall’, America’s ‘Madison Square Garden’ and West Indies’s ‘Jean Pierre Complex’.
Nashad’s statement
In 1986, Talat Mahmud did the last recording ghazal album for ‘Aakhn Saj Pickle’. Music Director Naushad once said that “My opinion about Talat Mahmood is very high. His singing is style. When he sings ghazals in a unique way with his velvet voice, he feels the real sweetness of Ghazal. There is a good grip on the language and they know which word has to be emphasized. Director and producer Mehboob Khan, whenever he meets him, keep a finger on Talat’s neck and tell him that the Noor of God is around your neck.

Talat Mahmud sang around 800 songs in various languages including Hindi in his long career, many of whom are still fresh in people’s minds. In the sixties, the changes in the film songs could not keep pace with singers like Talat Mahmood and his career came down. Mahmud’s scope was limited due to new singers like Muhammad Rafi and Mukesh in film songs.
Death
The artist, who made people crazy for a long time through a velvet voice, left the world on 9 May 1998.
