Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay (English: Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay, born: 23 July, 1898; died: 14 September, 1971) was a famous writer of Bengali language. He was awarded the ‘Gyanpeeth Award’ in 1966 for his famous novel ‘Ganadevata’. Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay was awarded the ‘Padma Bhushan’ by the Government of India in 1969 in the field of literature and education. He was from West Bengal.
Tarashankar Bandopadhyay was born on 23 July 1898 in Labhpur of Birbhum in Bengal. Tarashankar was the most famous among the Bengali novelists of his time. His novels ‘Arogya Niketan’ and ‘Ganadevata’ had been awarded. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 for ‘Arogya Niketan’ and the Jnanpith Award in 1967 for ‘Ganadevata’. His specialty was that he kept portraying regional life in a broad way. He also achieved good success in this work. Perhaps this was also the biggest reason for his popularity. While portraying regional life, it appears as if a photographer has taken a picture. Satyajit Ray also made a film on Tarashankar ji’s story ‘Jalsaghar’. Tarashankar Bandopadhyay died on 14 September 1971 in Calcutta (now Kolkata) of his home state West Bengal.
