This year the festival of Baikunth Chaturdashi is being celebrated today i.e. on Thursday, 14th November.
On this day, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Shiva and Shri Hari Vishnu. It is believed that by worshiping them one gets a place in heaven, all the work gets done and one also gets relief from the sorrows and sufferings of life. Story of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi
According to the Puranas, once Lord Vishnu took a pledge to worship Mahadev with 1 thousand lotus flowers. For this he came to Kashi and started worshiping as per the rituals. To test Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva reduced one lotus flower out of 1000. During the puja, when Lord Vishnu saw that one lotus flower was missing, he wanted to offer one of his eyes to Lord Shiva in exchange for it.
Then Mahadev himself appeared there and was very happy to see the devotion of Lord Vishnu. That day was the Chaturdashi date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Mahadev said that ‘from today onwards this Chaturdashi will be famous by the name of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi. Today, whoever worships Hari and Har jointly will get a place in Vaikuntha. Since then the fast of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi started being observed.
