According to the legend, once Mother Parvati and Lord Mahadev were playing Chaupar on the banks of river Narmada. To decide the victory or defeat in the game, Mahadev made an effigy and consecrated it. Lord Mahadev told the child to decide the winner after winning. Mahadev and Mata Parvati started playing and after all three, Mata Parvati won. After the game was over, the child declared Mahadev the winner. Hearing this, Mother Parvati became angry and cursed the child to remain handicapped.

After this the child apologized to Mother Parvati and said that this had happened by mistake. After which Mother Parvati said that the curse cannot be taken back but there is a solution for it. While telling the solution to the child, Mother Parvati said that snake girls will come to worship Lord Ganesha and you will have to fast as per their orders, which will free you from the curse. The child struggled with the curse for many years and one day snake girls came to worship Lord Ganesha. From whom the child asked the method of Ganesh fast. The child worshiped Lord Ganesha with true heart, due to which Lord Ganesha was pleased and asked for a boon.

The child prayed to Lord Ganesha and said, O Vinayak, give me so much strength that I can walk to Mount Kailash. Lord Ganesha blessed the child and disappeared. After this the child narrated the story of Lord Mahadev being freed from the curse on Mount Kailash. Mother Parvati had become angry with Lord Shiva since the day of Chaupar. As told by the child, Lord Shiva also fasted for Lord Ganesha for 21 days. Due to the effect of fasting, the resentment towards Lord Mahadev ended from the mind of Mother Parvati.
